Baptism is the first Sacrament of Initiation and leads to the others. Without baptism, the remaining sacraments are unattainable. To qualify to have your child baptized, at least one of the parents must be a baptized Catholic. Ideally, parents should be practicing Catholics, willing to attend Mass regularly with their child. In the eyes of our Church, parents are the first teachers of their children in the practice of the faith. Along with God, they are constant in the life of a child.
Requirements for Baptism:
The child’s birth certificate
Date and place of parents’ baptism(s)
A letter of suitability of the sponsor (attached)
Completed registration form signed by both parents (attached)
Attendance at a Baptism workshop (parents and sponsors)
Qualification and duties of Godparent/Sponsor
Must be a minimum of 16 years of age
Practicing Catholic who has been confirmed
Although one sponsor is sufficient, when there are two sponsors, one must be male and the other female.
The sponsor is responsible for assisting the parents in their duty as first teachers of the faith.
